It’s Saturday and for a change, it isn’t me that is going into the pen to lasso Mary for milking. Caroline jumps right in and begins the great chase. Round and round they go, Mary leading Caroline around the pen giving her a good workout. Finally, just before Caroline was about to collapse, Mary relented and let Caroline lasso her to lead her to the milking bench. While Mary was being milked I headed over to the chicken coop and changed their water. We filled a quart bottle with Mary’s milk and were on our way. Celia and Jimmie return this evening, my milking chores are finished.
Waddles, the Rooster
It’s Friday the 13th, not one bit of bad luck happened today. This week our car died a sudden death, I helped birth a kid, I chased an errant goat through the desert, I closely observed flies, even photographed toad poops but Friday just came and went. While I was busy helping out on the farm I had time to sit for a few minutes with the chickens. Meet Waddles, he’s the newest rooster on Tonopah Rob’s farm.
Birth
Yesterday I watched a kid being born, as in a baby goat. There I was, milking Godiva when a strange sound caught my ear. I looked over and saw a goat in the process of giving birth. I went to get a towel and came back to sit near mom and her new baby to see if any assistance was in order when another goat meandered over and let out a goat sound I had never heard before, kind of a “Uuuaaaaaaah” sound, but really low and deep. A look at her backside and it was obvious that the first birth inspired her that it was as good to join the birthing party. The first baby was born in seconds, but this second mom was taking her time, and then taking more time. Better call Pam and get her over to help as I have no clue why this isn’t going like mom number one. We wait patiently but mom number two is obviously having problems. We entered the pen, held her steady, and during the next contraction found that her baby was in the “Position-Knee Front Knee Bent” and was requiring some help. A few minutes passed and the decision to grab the leg that was beginning to show was made and so the pulling began. Yeah, I know now that you are supposed to reach in and adjust the leg but in that intense moment, friendly old Google wasn’t in the pen with us. Fortunately, it all went fine and another baby goat joined the herd. Today’s photo of the day is not of that baby, those pictures might gross some of you out.
Fly
Back at Tonopah Rob’s Vegetable Farm after spending the early part of the morning milking goats. Since my nerves were still shot due to yesterday afternoon’s wild goat chase, I took some time out for a couple of hours by following insects around to photograph them. About that goat chase: Everything had gone so well during the morning when Celia had still been there that I thought I had everything under control. I went to get Mary from the goat pen but she wasn’t being cooperative so I grabbed the lasso and quickly had her collared and over on the milking bench. I figured, why keep the lasso on, she’s eating the corn, getting milked, she came around – no problems. Which was true, that is until she finished eating (she gets extra food for milking). She jumped off the platform and had different ideas as to which direction she should be heading. Usually, she would run over to the gate to rejoin the herd, but not today. I had closed the farm gate as directed, so no prob there – right? Sure enough, Mary headed down the driveway, for the gate. Hah, I thought, I have her cornered now! Nope, I can’t believe that goat fit through that small opening between the bars of the gate, but slip out she did, and off she went into the desert. Great, now what? Call Celia’s friend Pam – HELP! To make a long story short, Mary was on the loose for only about an hour. You can’t imagine how happy I was that it was only 102 degrees out there and not 115 ….grrrrrr. So you see, following pesky flies zipping from flower to flower was a lot more fun than chasing a wiley goat through sand and brush.
Kid
This week I will be tending to the milking of some goats at Chile Acres while Jimmie and Celia are on vacation in Florida. After a short milking lesson, Celia trusts I will do fine taking udder in hand, giving a squeeze, and making sure the milk keeps flowing. No….today’s photo is not of one of the goats I’ll be milking, this is one of the new kids – Caroline and I named him Jaanu (Hindu for sweetheart or soulmate). As the temperatures outside have soared during the last days, new kids spend the better part of the day in the air-conditioned comfort of the farmhouse bathtub.
Oinky Oinky
Meet Priscilla the pig, she is Jimmie Petersen’s porcine birthday gift. This cute little swine is the newest member to the ungulate menagerie over at Chile Acres. Priscilla’s introduction to the farm cannot be better told than by Bubbles the Goat who described the hoggy shenanigans on Chile Acres own website, read all about it here. Priscilla currently resides in the barn next to the horses, who find her rather interesting. She likes cooling off in her private pool and munching on apples.
