My Valentine – NOT!

Jutta Engelhardt sharing a iDeclair dessert at Claim Jumpers in Phoenix, Arizona

This is my mother-in-law, not my valentine. My valentine is sitting next to her mom out of the photo. This will be the last photo this year of Jutta, because, after 67 days of vacation with us, she is heading back to Frankfurt this Friday. During her stay with us, my mother-in-law walked in the Pacific surf on a blue sky, warm Christmas day in Santa Barbara, on New Years’ morning she watched 35,000 geese simultaneously launch into the sky to go feed. January 12th, she celebrated our 13th wedding anniversary in San Francisco and then a week later we hiked the snowy rim of the Grand Canyon. Then it was off to Los Angeles and Santa Barbara again before taking in a weekend in Death Valley. In between, Jutta helped me make homemade mozzarella, pickles, granola, and quite a few home-cooked meals. She missed most of the dreadful gray Frankfurt winter but had her fair share of cold weather in New Mexico and even here in Phoenix which came as a surprise to her. After so many days with the old lady, it is time for her to go, but we will still miss her when she finally does return home.

Wyld Men

My mother-in-law with one of the Wyld Men at the Renaissance Festival in Arizona

This will surely be one of my favorite all-time photos of my mother-in-law. Following the Wyld Men show at today’s Renaissance Festival, a muddy Dr. Cranius Lunch gives Jutta a big wet and loving hug. At the Festival, the Wyld Men are our favorite show of gut-busting laughter. A crowd-pleaser for years has been the  Ded Bob show, you owe it to yourself to catch a performance. The Tortuga Twins are better than ever and the Hey Nunnie Nunnie show has been growing on me. First stop this year, like all other years, was at the Turkey Leg stand – yum. We also enjoyed the King’s nuts which were warm and sweet, and the Lusty Wench chocolate-covered strawberries were perky as ever.

Mozzarella

Jutta Engelhardt in Phoenix, Arizona

Having found wonderful fresh RAW milk, my mother-in-law and I embark upon making some homemade mozzarella. The milk comes courtesy of the folks over at SaveYourDairy in Queen Creek, Arizona, and while this milk is more expensive than what is now traditional milk, i.e., pasteurized and homogenized, I just feel better about using a natural product that for some 10,000 years was just fine the way it came. We made marinara the day before and will make dough for pasta when the cheese is finished. Cooking this way is quite time-consuming but the satisfaction is irreplaceable.

The Rest of the Family

Caroline Wise, Jutta Engelhardt, Jean Kneztic, Daniel, Teresa, Sam, Nancy, and me; John Wise in Santa Barbara, California

We left early this morning for the drive into the mountains to an old stagecoach road. The photo includes my cousin Nancy, her husband Sam, her mom Jean, and kids Teresa and Daniel. Of course, my Aunt Ann and Uncle Woody are with us too, but as is often their routine, they passed on being in the photo and encouraged all of us to get a photo for them.

Our drive took us here to Cold Springs Tavern, where the proprietors have been feeding travelers for 141 years.

A wood fire, great food, and an abundance of atmosphere made for a terrific start to Christmas Eve.

On the drive back down San Marcos Pass (Highway 154), the Channel Islands in the distance were as clear as we have ever seen them.

Holiday in Santa Barbara

Woody Burns, Jutta Engelhardt, Caroline Wise, and Ann Burns in Goleta, California

We are spending Christmas in Santa Barbara with my great Uncle Woody Burns and great Aunt Ann. It is a perfect day, although it started a little on the cold side. After the usual shopping around at Costco, we enjoyed our hot dog lunch with Ted’s Hot Dogs (via Buffalo, NY).

Family at Christmas in Goleta, California

In the afternoon, my cousin Nancy, her husband Sam, and their two kids, Daniel and Teresa, along with my aunt Jean, joined us at the Burns residence. Later on, Nancy and I went on a last-minute hunt for a Christmas tree – no easy feat in Santa Barbara, I can assure you. With 77 degrees (25c) of crisp blue skies overhead, towering mountains behind us, and the ocean before us, Santa Barbara is the perfect place to celebrate Christmas and watch for birds.

In The Sunshine

Jutta Engelhardt and Eleanor Burke after lunch in Phoenix, Arizona

My mother-in-law Jutta and my great-aunt Eleanor a.k.a. Auntie spent lunch together today. Cooking was courtesy of myself; we had planned to go out, but my aunt was enjoying the sun on the upstairs balcony and I had some farm-fresh veggies with me that I had picked up earlier in the day, so I got to work in the kitchen and whipped up something for the ladies. Auntie and Jutta shared some purple carrots with a honey-butter glaze, steamed spinach, and broccoli with a squeeze of lemon. For dessert, they had some of my homemade applesauce I had brought over to replenish Auntie’s now-empty bottle. My mom had made Christmas cookies which Jutta found so tasty, I am certain she must have eaten no less than a dozen.
