Disneyland All Day and Night

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Today, we visited Disneyland in Anaheim, California. We took close to a thousand photos between 7:30 a.m. and midnight when we left the park.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Seasonally appropriate, the park was decked out in candy corn and pumpkin decorations. Our first task was to race over to “Ghost Galaxy” – Space Mountain rebranded for Halloween – before the lines grew too long.

With that out of the way, the next most important thing was the “first churro” of the day!

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

It was obvious to us anyway that “We can’t get enough of The Nightmare Before Christmas treatment the Haunted House gets year after year” would be up next.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Yep, it’s just perfect.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Keeping with the dark ambiance theme, Pirates of the Caribbean was a natural fit.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

And no visit to Disneyland would be complete without heading out for a genuine Jungle Cruise.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Oh, who am I fooling? It’s a Small World is an obligatory stop in our book, too.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Then there’s the good ‘ole Alice in Wonderland ride; we love it, too.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Well, truth be told, Alice would be nothing without the Cheshire Cat.

Caroline Wise at Disneyland in Anaheim, California

I don’t know about you, but I think my wife looks hot riding a Dumbo.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Yep, we do all the old cheesy rides.

Caroline Wise at Disneyland in Anaheim, California

We also try to do all the new rides again and again, and then yet again.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Seriously though, I don’t think that it’s Buzz Lightyear here that’s the draw; it’s the Little Green Men.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Earlier, as in shortly after entering the park, we hopped aboard the newly rebranded Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage, but none of those photos worked out.

Caroline Wise at Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Yeah buddy, time for Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride because everyone must ride the toad at least once in life.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

And if you can’t afford a real ride down the Mississippi, there’s always the Mark Twain Riverboat included with your Disney admission that is almost as good as the real thing.

Caroline Wise and John Wise at Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Crazy to think that by this time of the day, I’d almost shot 500 photos to get to the 18 being shared above.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

That’s how we feel the whole time we are at Disneyland.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

No trip to Disneyland could ever be complete without visiting the Enchanted Tiki Room.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

You know that part during the Tiki Room War Chant when the orchids start singing;

Tahuwai la a tahuwai wai la
Ehu hene la a pili koo lua la
Pututui lu a ite toe la
Hanu lipo ita paalai

And then, as the song ends, thunder strikes, and rain streams down the windows; this was when I was young; I’d cry because now we would have to go outside and it’s raining at Disneyland. I just love the magic that is found in this park because we’d step outside, and the sky was blue.

Caroline Wise, Tommy "Tiny" Lister, and John Wise at Disneyland in Anaheim, California

On the way to Mickey’s Toontown, standing against a rail next to a tree, there he was, President Lindberg – no, we are not confusing our Presidents. Initially, I walked by and thought this guy looked familiar; as Caroline caught up with me, I asked her, “Isn’t that….?” and she quickly answered, “Yes, that’s Tiny Lister.” Tommy “Tiny” Lister has a special place in our memories from his role as President Lindberg in the movie The Fifth Element – one of our all-time favorite movies and one of the few we have honestly seen more than half a dozen times.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Save Toontown till late in the day, and all the parents will have taken their kids to dinner and bed after a busy day, leaving this corner of the park to us adults who never want to quit.

Caroline Wise at Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Aside from all the slobber and boogers all over everything, it is as though we are on a private after-hours tour.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Just hours ago, there were thousands of kids filling every square foot of the streets and while their energy is missing, the delight of Toontown is in full force.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Nothing like a late-night visit back to It’s a Small World.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Great way to end the night ready to barf after stepping off these. Nope.

Caroline Wise at Disneyland in Anaheim, California

The last two hours in the park are just the best; we are tired, and our feet are sore, but all the frantic noises and rushing around have wound down. Everyone else is taking their time and slowly appreciating the things we all raced by earlier.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

We watched a spectacular Halloween fireworks show this evening, the best we’ve ever seen at Disneyland here in Anaheim, although Disneyworld 1999 still holds firm as the most epic fireworks show witnessed by the two of us. The only line we didn’t endure today was for Splash Mountain but darn near everything else was ridden twice.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

It’s just before midnight as we leave through the gate we entered 16 hours ago. This really is the Happiest Place on Earth.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

And yes, we are living happily ever after.

Attention: This is yet one more post that originally had but one photo and maybe 100 words that told of our day. Here in late 2022, this oversight is being repaired.

Late yesterday afternoon, Caroline and I began the 350-mile (560km) drive from Phoenix, Arizona, to Anaheim, California, so we could spend ALL DAY AND NIGHT at Disneyland on Saturday. Up at 6:00 in the morning, in line by 7:00, walked through the gate at 8:00, and didn’t leave until nearly 1:00 in the morning.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

We were just here six months ago on Christmas Eve, so having that experience so near our memories, we were able to slow down the chase to experience it all again and focus on some other details that might be missed though, after more than a dozen times of visiting Disneyland together, you’d think that we’d seen it all by now.

Tiki Room at Disneyland in Anaheim, California

There are some attractions that we’ll never miss, such as the Tiki Room. If I knew the words by heart and had memorized every moment, we’d still return for one more show to listen to Jose wake up with “Buenos días, señorita. My siestas are getting shorter and shorter. Oh, look at all the people. Welcome to Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room. Hey, Michael, mi amigo, pay attention, it’s showtime.”

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

I don’t know that I’ve ever consciously seen this, which begs the question, how many other things at Disneyland have I missed and are now forever gone?

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

To have the imagination I did when I was but 6 or 7 years old and first saw this gate and fence and felt the crazy excitement that not only were we at Disneyland, but we were going to unimaginable places within it.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

This was called Innoventions and was a showcase of tech built inside the Carousel Theater.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Asimo was relatively new to the world of robots when we saw it first perform here at Innoventions; it was astonishing.

The elevated track used to be part of the People Mover. Later, it became Rocket Rods, and now the thing sits silent, even now in 2022, as I write this.

Taking time to finally paddle the Rivers of America on our way around Tom Sawyer Island.

Just as Space Mountain propels us into the future, Rivers of America transported us into the past.

The park simply looks beautiful from all angles.

And if all the fun wasn’t enough, throw in a parade for extra measure.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

How long before the barber shop quartette idea no longer resonates with parkgoers?

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

After my family went to Disneyland, we always had a bunch of A, B, and C coupons remaining as those were kids’ rides, and we all wanted E-tickets as those were for the really exciting rides.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

When we were kids, the last thing we wanted to see were the corny shows, now we’re those people that enjoy the corny shows.

Caroline Wise at Disneyland in Anaheim, California

No, Dad, not the stupid Dumbo ride; I’m not a little kid anymore. Now I’m older and find it cute and romantic as Caroline, and I take to the skies flying in circles in our own private Dumbo.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

From Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride to the Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, the formula still works.

Fireworks at Disneyland in Anaheim, California

The fireworks went off at 9:25 p.m. with a special extravaganza in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the opening of the park.

Fireworks at Disneyland in Anaheim, California

After dozens of times at Disneyland, we still find new things to do and are never bored, even for a moment – the power of imagination and romance.

Caroline Wise at Disneyland in Anaheim, California

The rides are all shut down; it’s now after midnight the only thing left to do is stroll down Main Street, stopping in at the Gibson Girl Ice Cream Parlor to share a sweet.

Christmas Eve at Disneyland

Caroline Wise and John Wise at Disneyland in Anaheim, California

This trip to Disneyland was supposed to be made for Caroline’s birthday a couple of weeks ago, but this is working out perfectly, too, at the beginning of an 8-day coastal road trip that will take us to Monterey and the aquarium, San Francisco, Alcatraz, Point Reyes, and right back down the Big Sur coast.

Caroline Wise at Disneyland in Anaheim, California

First up was Space Mountain, as it always seems to have the longest lines later in the day.

Time warp to tomorrow.

Taking a picture of the point where a camera takes our picture so I can exit Space Mountain and take a picture of the monitor showing me our picture without us having to buy it…meta.

Well then, pencil in 2007 to come see Nemo.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Another time warp, this time into the past.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

The mix of Christmas and Halloween at this time of year is the best time for us to visit. We are in the Haunted Mansion for those who may not know.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Yep, catching all of our favorites because who knows how long things like the Jungle Cruise will remain at Disneyland.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Same for the Tiki Room. Can these old-fashioned attractions still be appealing to kids growing up on the internet, superhero movies, and video games?

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Can’t say anything has changed here inside the Tiki Room, even after 42 years since it opened.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

It was still quite foggy when we entered the park. Obviously, the weather has improved.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Oh yeah, almost forgot to share that this is the 50th anniversary of Disneyland.

Caroline Wise at Disneyland in Anaheim, California

I find her cute.

Disneyland to Magic Mountain – Day 2

Jay Patel, Rinku Shah, Raenu Bhadriraju, Krupesh Shah, and Caroline Wise at Disneyland in California

We stayed the night across the street at the Stardust Motel because that’s always where Caroline and I wanted to stay. The car is safe over there during the day, and as we are staying there again tonight, we don’t have to move it in the afternoon. So the convenience and money saved just add to the ease of simply walking across the street and across the massive parking area to get in line early and enter Disneyland before the crowds arrive.

Rinku Shah at Disneyland, California

For Rinku, her brother Krupesh, and our friend Jay, this was their first time visiting the park.

Caroline Wise, John Wise, Krupesh Shah and Rinku Shah at Disneyland, California

Getting the rides that will be difficult to get on due to long lines out of the way first has us already on the Matterhorn Bobsleds.

Rinku Shah at Disneyland, California

Taking Rinku with us was like taking a seven-year to Disneyland for the first time. She just couldn’t help but show how much fun she was having.

Caroline Wise and Jay Patel at Disneyland, California

I suppose the same goes for my wife, too. If Jay flies a plane like he does a rocket ship, we might be in trouble.

Jay Patel, Rinku Shah, Raenu Bhadriraju and Caroline Wise at Disneyland in California

I’m not sure, but I think Jay is trying to figure out what went wrong back there on the rocket and why he couldn’t break out of going around in circles. The TSRK on Rinku’s shirt is a shout-out to her gang back in her village in India. Rinku was telling us how much Disneyland feels like those days when she and her friends would ride the ox-cart around the village when they were growing up.

Caroline Wise and Rinku Shah at Disneyland, California

Hey, Caroline, look, you have a carbuncle on your shoulder. Stinku doesn’t know what a carbuncle is; probably better that way.

Rinku Shah at Disneyland, California

When Rinku first met me, she thought that I looked like a “Galgota” or marigold; here we are, turning her into one.

Jay Patel at Disneyland, California

Jay being a lot taller it was more difficult to get enough hands around his face to turn him into a Galgota.

Jay Patel, Rinku Shah, Raenu Bhadriraju, Krupesh Shah and Caroline Wise at Disneyland in California

We stayed until the main park was closed and then slowly meandered down Main Street, visiting the gift stores and grazing on sweets along the way. This was yet another great 16-hour visit to the Happiest Place on Earth.

New Years in California – Day 3

Caroline Wise and John Wise at Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Do you see the happiness in these faces? We were just getting going at Disneyland and would spend 14 hours here, not leaving until so late that we’d not get back home before 5:00 in the morning. A roadside nap along the way helped, and the next way was grueling, but hey, we’re still kind of young, right?

Caroline Wise and John Wise at Disneyland in Anaheim, California

It’s the holiday season, and Disneyland is a perfect place to visit while the festivities are going on. Add to this that we simply LOVE Disneyland, and there couldn’t be a greater way to ring in the New Year than with a visit to the ocean and The Greatest Place on Earth.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

The Tiki Room is now as old as I am, as we were born in the same year, but unlike me, it still looks exactly the same as ever.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Starting about a month before Halloween, the Haunted House is turned into a Nightmare Before Christmas-themed haunted house. It is amazing and usually warrants at least two visits while we’re in the park.

Caroline Wise and John Wise at Disneyland in Anaheim, California

The Jungle Cruise is another favorite. Oh, what the heck? Everything at Disneyland is a favorite, including the woman on my right.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

One can never get enough of It’s A Small World, though I think I enjoy it more at night.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

It’s a world of laughter
A world of tears
It’s a world of hopes
And a world of fears
There’s so much that we share
That it’s time we’re aware
It’s a small world after all

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

There’s absolute magic in the eyes of a child who gazes upon these spectacular, otherworldly sights for the first time in their life. They’ve likely never seen anything comparable in their upbringing, and the idea that we are here to play, explore, eat, laugh, and find enchantment without any responsibility is a recipe for creating perfection and indelible memories that last a lifetime, even in many adults.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

The contrast of places, the bright colors, and all of our senses being stimulated in multiple different ways truly is the realization of our dreams coming true. Disney was an American genius who allowed children to grow up with hope and adults to remember the joy of being a child.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

As I said, there is never enough of It’s a Small World, even if the lines are long.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

I suppose twice in one day will have to suffice.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

It’s almost sad that so many parents leave as it starts to get dark for dinner or maybe to get their kids to bed on “time.” On the one hand, it is good for us because there’s a noticeable shrinking of crowds and wait times for rides, but then so many children miss the incredible lighting.

Disneyland in Anaheim, California

More importantly, they miss the fireworks, which are often some of the best displays ever. And who cares how late it is or if the kids are tired? It was about 10:00 p.m. as we left and checked in with our friend Mark Shimer about a place to crash for the night so we could drive home in the morning refreshed; he was obliging and us thankful. What a great New Year’s celebration this has been.
