Jessica at the Grand Canyon

Jessica Wise at Montezuma Castle in Camp Verde, Arizona

Jessica and I took a solo trip to test if we could tolerate each other without having referees on our sides. We are only about an hour and a half in, and so far so good. This was my first opportunity to try and ditch the kid when I told her I was going to leave her here at Montezuma Castle but reassured her that seeing it was a castle, a handsome prince would come along and rescue her so she could go off and live happily ever after. It didn’t work out; maybe I should have tried this when she was five or six.

I don’t get it either. Here we are at 3.5 hours stuck with each other in a car, and she’s still smiling. Maybe if I doused her in cold water, she’d freeze with that smile on her face, and I could pretend she’s always this pleasant. Should you be wondering where this latent hostility is coming from? While I post all these nice photos of Jessica and occasionally me in them, too, there are moments of hard friction. Nothing really surprising here as she is barely 17, and it’s the first time we’ve seen one another since she was about 12 or 13.

“Dad, why are we going to a volcanic crater?” I’m making a human sacrifice to the gods who are angry that belligerent young ladies make old men grow old too fast.

Okay, I’m heading to 7-11 to get us some beers; I’ll be right back. “You know I’m only 17, right? And it’s cold out here.” Being a father is not all that easy, apparently.

Seemingly stuck with her, I let her get back in the car.

You might be wondering by now just how many times in one year I can go to Wupatki and not get bored. I probably have another 30 or 40 times left in me.

Five hours into this rolling nightmare and I’d swear she’s looking even happier. This plan of mine to forever forego needing to be a father again is backfiring. I was certain that 20 minutes in a car with just her and I and she’d be hitchhiking to the airport to escape, but nope, she’s being a good sport.

I was like….stop looking at me; look at the Grand Canyon! She was like, “No way I don’t trust you as you already tried leaving me down the road at an old ruin, you threatened to toss me into a dormant volcano (that was dumb), so how do I know I won’t have an “accident” here at the edge of the canyon?” And then I was kind of caught and had to admit I’d been considering it if those old people would have left and there’d been no witnesses.

For lunch, I slipped my daughter some peyote. This is the inside of her mind while she was hallucinating.

That last comment about the peyote was a lie; I wouldn’t give a teenager a psychedelic, especially after we’d shared all those beers while driving here.

No time for humor here as this elderly Navajo woman is doing amazing work weaving a rug.

OMG, she’s laughing. If this ends up having been fun she’ll likely want to come back. What am I supposed to do?

No, it’s okay, that sign is for foreigners, I tell her. We’re Americans, and that means we can go out there. She’s trying to tell me without saying it out loud that I’m full of it; just look at her face. Hey, is that peanut butter stuck in your teeth?

In celebration of a day well spent where she didn’t cry and I didn’t have to cry inside, we took a break at the El Tovar and had hot chocolates. I explained to her that Caroline and I first enjoyed hot chocolates here for our honeymoon back in 1994 and that they were our favorites. She balked and said Caroline the Homewrecker should have choked on it. Just kidding. The truth is we’ve had a brilliant day where mayhem was the furthest thing from my mind; who knows what’s in a teenager’s brain, if anything?

Jessica with Arizona Family

Jessica Wise and Herbert Kurchoff in Phoenix, Arizona

Trying to help Jessica have a meaningful time with us by making up for some of the years of lost visits due to complications with her living situation in Texas. Today, we hung out with her great-grandfather Herbert Kurchoff and his sister Eleanor.

This is my great aunt Eleanor and Herbie’s older sister. We all refer to her as Auntie. She was born the same year Arizona became a state or seventy-six years before Jessica was born.

We all got together for dinner tonight to round out the day with family. Back when Jessica moved to the United States about five years before Caroline and I did, she spent time here in Arizona visiting my mom and Amanda. This is the first time they’ve been back together since 1998, when Jessica last came out.

Jessica in Santa Barbara and Hollywood

288 Placer Drive in Goleta, California

It was well after midnight when we knocked on the door here at 288 Placer Drive in Goleta, California. There’s never been a year that my Uncle Woody didn’t hang Christmas lights for the holidays. There’s such a reassuring feeling every time I pull into the driveway; I think it’s because they’ve lived in a single house longer than anyone else I know. We chatted a bit and then headed to sleep because no matter when we laid down, we were going to be getting up for breakfast around 7:00. My aunt and uncle have their routines and no one is going to interfere with them.

This was the first time Jessica met my favorite great aunt and great uncle. As always, they put family on a pedestal and were thrilled to meet her. While Jessica never had the opportunity to meet any of her paternal grandparents on my side of the family, amazingly, she’s spending the first part of the day with her great-great-aunt and uncle.

After breakfast, it was off to the dog park and then some chatting before, all of a sudden it was lunchtime and time for us to start back down the coast before leaving California for Arizona.

As we were passing the Summerland area, it was obvious a low-tide event was occurring, so no matter that we had to move in the general direction of home, we were going to explore tide pools, and that was that.

Seeing an anemone or starfish is like admiring a sunrise over mountains or a sunset at the ocean. If you don’t stop to take in these sights, you are missing out on life.

Okay, that’s enough of the Pacific; we’ve got to get going.

Jessica Wise in Hollywood, California

Until we got to Hollywood for the briefest of stops to snap a photo of Jessica on Hollywood Boulevard and Gower Street, it didn’t matter whose star was on the sidewalk; what was important was that it was a star, and we could see the Hollywood sign behind my daughter. Maybe on a subsequent visit, we can spend more time exploring Los Angeles. BTW, if you think her gesture should be interpreted as, “What, do you just want me to stand right here?” that is exactly what she’s asking.

Jessica at Disneyland

Jessica Wise and Amanda Goff at Disneyland in Anaheim, California

We are spending the better part of the day into the night right here in Disneyland. One of the first rides we went on knowing that the line is one of the longest later in the day, is the Matterhorn.

It being Christmas time, we can always count on a great parade during the holiday.

We stuck around for the fireworks and then made our way over to Downtown Disney.

My other sister, Shari Weismann, joined us at the end of the day so she could meet Jessica. Amanda was leaving with Shari to stay the night with her, and so after a goodnight to them we were finally on the way to Santa Barbara to stay the night with my Aunt Ann and Uncle Woody.

Jessica Arrives in Phoenix

Caroline Wise, Jessica Wise, and John Wise in Phoenix, Arizona

Jessica Wise is my daughter and recently turned 17. and had asked if she could come to spend winter break with us. She lives in Florence, Texas, with her mom, who is still nice, Barry, her deranged stepfather, and three siblings who are a bit peculiar, as I’ve come to understand them; of course, that’s just my interpretation. You might notice a scar on my daughter’s cheek that was from a family dog that attacked her in the kitchen one night and subsequently had its head blown off by Barry with a shotgun right there in the kitchen; I’d probably have done the same thing if I had a shotgun and one of our cats opened up someone’s face. Jessica will be with us for ten days. With no time to spare, we needed to get busy.

Jessica Wise at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona

After dropping Caroline at her office Jessica and I  headed over to the Heard Museum so I could wash some of the Texan bumpkin off her, but it didn’t work. The next stop was over at Sonal’s shop, where she met Rinku, who threaded her eyebrows; this was a first for her. After we picked up Caroline from her short day in the office, we scooped up Amanda and drove to Anaheim, California.
