Redwoods

Redwoods National Park in California

Time to hit the road, well, after taking to the skies. Today, Southwest Airlines flew us to Sacramento, California, after a short delay while they exchanged planes since the one we had boarded first was leaking fuel from the engine. Flying meant we were ill-prepared for camping, requiring us to purchase supplies. Walmart and Whole Foods were the two stops that brought us up to speed. Now, on the way, we aim for the Redwoods National Park on our way to the Oregon Coast State Parks, where we’ll be roughing it in yurts.

Those Mongolian-influenced tents come with a heater, lockable door, beds, table, light, windows, picnic table, and barbecue. The weather is beautiful, and things are looking good. Tonight, we are back at Harris Beach State Park for the third time in the past five years. As a matter of fact, we’ll be staying in yurts for five consecutive nights. This year, we got smart and decided to bring our own bedding, as sleeping under our comforter with pillows picked up locally is far better than our sleeping bags, or so we hope.

  1. Wal-Mart? Wow! Somehow I didn’t imagine you being a customer of that place. Have you seen "Wal-Mart the High Price of Low Costs?" Check it out sometime. It was produced by BraVe New Films.

  2. Of course I have seen the documentary, but I have also seen quite a few other films that would have me challenging every action we take or don’t take in life and how we live, eat, consume and are governed. Let me ask you, if you fly into an unfamiliar city on vacation and you need to grab a number of items from hardware to camping gear, you have a limited amount of time, where would you go? Or for the sake of idealism would you simply not travel with those requirements? Or would you take the time to visit a myriad of shops and make yourself late?

I have considered the issues surrounding Wally World but have come to the conclusion that these imports are going to come here one way or other other. It’s like choosing the lesser of two evils, Republicans or Democrats, just because I like neither doesn’t mean I leave America to make my statement. Convenience at times dictates that we compromise our idealism, and then immediately brush our teeth to try and rid ourselves of the bad taste in our mouth.
