At the Gig
Yesterday Paul Barker of Malekko Heavy Industry called me regarding the repair of a Eurorack module his company manufactures. Paul is actually Malekko’s co-founder with Joshua Holley. In talking I asked if he was the same Paul Barker I’d seen with Revolting Cocks back in 1991 while I was living in Frankfurt, Germany, sure enough, he was one and the same. When he found out that I live in Arizona now he told me that he was on tour with a gig in Mesa and offered to put Caroline and me on the guest list, which we gladly accepted.
First up tonight was the solo act Mahsa Zargaran also known as Omniflux.
This is Paul Barker now performing as Lead Into Gold where he wears all the hats using backing electronics while he plays guitar. For a few of the songs from tonight’s performance, Mahsa came out to play rhythm guitar with him. This stripped-down, groovy industrial flavored performance was a bit short on time but delivered the goods all the same. I especially enjoyed listening to Faster Than Light live.
Ohgr put on a great show that never once touched on Ogre’s Skinny Puppy band. Yes, that’s right Ogre sings for Ohgr. By the way, Skinny Puppy was one of those bands I filmed in Frankfurt. It was back in April 1988 at the Batschkapp. Tonight’s favorite tracks were Comedown, Watergate, and Witness. Gotta say how nice it was seeing Ogre exploring creativity away from well-worn grooves he could easily exploit.
