They Call This Root Planing

In the dentist chair getting a root planing, what I always wanted, for a second time too

Once wasn’t enough, nope not for me. I had to, wanted to, have my roots planed a second time. This root planing stuff is the kind of deep cleaning that is required for those of us lucky enough to have gum disease – I wouldn’t trade it for a million dollars. I woke up this morning, couldn’t eat because I was so nervous, took a valium as prescribed by the dentist a half-hour before being delivered for my appointment, got connected to the gas after fifteen injections of painkiller, and sat back for four full hours of sound and fury only seen in horror films. Ahhh, the good life. Hey it’s not all bad, later we leave for Disneyland.

Living in a Cactus

A bird taking up home in a saguaro cactus

The Gila Woodpecker in its nest burrowed into a saguaro cactus. The bird was furiously flying back and forth feeding its young who were screeching from their safe cactus home, high above the desert floor. Whenever I’ve been away from Arizona for any period of time, it is the saguaro that first reminds me that I’m back in the desert and what a beautiful place it is.

Hemu and Friends

Hemu and friends following a dance recital for the Arathi School of Indian Dance in Phoenix, Arizona

Again this year Caroline and I attended Asha Gopal’s Arathi School of Indian Dance recital. And again this year our friend’s daughter Hemu performed, here she is with two friends following their performance. To see my photo from last year’s dance recital, click here. To view and maybe purchase some really nice professional photos from this and other recitals check out Steven Potter’s website at www.stevesphotos.photoreflect.com – look under Sunnyslope HS 2006 for this particular event.

Saguaro Flower

A Saguaro Flower blooming in Phoenix, Arizona

The saguaros are blooming. Getting a photo is not an easy task though, as these flowers tend to be at the very top of the cactus and its arms. Occasionally, I might spot a saguaro with a malformed arm bent down towards the ground with flowers in bloom, but then I’m probably speeding by with no safe spot to pull over and snap a photo. I found this rogue flower on the side of a saguaro, and with an 8-foot ladder, I was able to get just high enough to take this image before these beautiful flowers drop away under the crushing summer sun.
